In Oak Class (Year 6), we have been learning about World War Two. To celebrate reaching the end of the war we hosted our very own VE Day street party!
On Tuesday 27th February, we invited parents to join us as the children furthered their learning by immersing themselves in fun learning activities that illuminated what life was like during wartime. The class crafted Union Jacks (as seen below) and tried their hand at writing in something a bit different to what they’d usually write in their schoolbooks – Morse code.
Everyone also baked their own wartime carrot cookies to experience what cooking was like and to boost their empathy and understanding of the time. These went down a treat, even if some pupils struggled to get the right ratio!
"I found it really fun because I like spending time with friends in different locations outside the classroom. The cooking was definitely my favourite bit, except I added too much water and my carrot cookie was more like a cake!” Chesney, Year 6 pupil.
We then finished with a quiz to consolidate our learning. It was amazing to see that despite all the fun, everybody retained an incredible amount of knowledge. Miss. Rowland was blown away: “I was really impressed with everyone's knowledge of World War 2 during our quiz, especially when recalling all the dates!”
Our parent events are a great way to have families join us in New Oak for enjoyable learning, crafts and bonding. It’s brilliant to hear pupils and parents agree: "It was nice having my mum with me during the event and she loved being able to see how I'm doing in school". Isabelle, Year 6 pupil (pictured below).
It was amazing seeing pupils and parents enjoying themselves throughout the event. Mrs. Rea agreed: “We had a fantastic VE Day Celebration. It was great to see parents getting involved with the WW2 quiz and the wartime carrot cookies. I hope they tasted as nice as they looked!”
