Deaf Learning Base
The Deaf Learning Base at Oasis Academy New Oak offers a specialised and inclusive education for children who are deaf or have a hearing impairment. The DLB is staffed by specialised teachers of the deaf and trained support workers. All students in the DLB have an EHCP (Education Health Care Plan) and they are taught in small groups or one to one for English and Maths. Staff use a multi-sensory approach and a range of teaching tools to secure students' engagement.
We are committed to inclusion and make opportunities for the students in the DLB to spend time in mainstream classes where all teachers have received Deaf Awareness training. The Academy buildings are acoustically designed to minimise sound and a Soundfield system boosts the teachers' voices. Adapted resources, advice and support means that students have the very best opportunities to learn. Being in the mainstream classes gives DLB students the opportunity to develop friendships with their hearing peers.
We are very proud of the students' achievements and encourage inclusivity of all across the whole schol.
Pupils are well cared for in the school because staff know them well and have a good understanding of pupils’ pastoral needs. Staff have fostered positive relationships with pupils and this interaction underpins the welcoming, inclusive and friendly nature of the school. For example, in assembly, pupils were taught new signs to communicate with deaf children. They responded with enthusiasm and were keen to develop their use of sign language.
