Pupil Roles

To join the Mini Senior Leadership Team (Mini SLT), aspiring year 6s send their applications, complete with references, and then have interviews with our principal, Mr Allan. Mr Allan then elects the team based on who he thinks will bring the most positivity, maturity and thoughtfulness to the role.

The team meets with the principal every week and, after liaising with our Academy MPs, suggests ways in which the school can improve. For instance, one of the more recent changes brought about by the Mini SLT is the Wet Play Box, which is a box full of equipment and items of enrichment for when it’s too wet for the pupils to go outside at breaktime.

Our team of Academy MPs consists of one member from each year group that have been elected by the other members of their year. They meet with our Deputy Principal, Mrs. Black, once a fortnight to relay the pupil voice from their year to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and the pupil SLT, and make sure everyone’s voice is heard. What’s more, they link with academy MPs from other academies and across Oasis to share best practice.

They also work on eco projects and are currently creating posters and pieces of writing to promote ideas of being eco-conscious around the school.

Our Physical Health Champions are act as ambassadors of physical health. They encourage healthy eating in the canteen and assist in Sports Day and competitions.

What’s more, they liaise with our Sports Coach and PE Lead, Mr. Mirmigkidis, for ‘Take the Lead’ sessions. These entail planning engaging and fun physical activities for the school and then taking them at break and lunch times.

Our Mental Health Champions meet monthly with our Designated Safeguarding Lead, Mrs Walsh, to discuss mindfulness and formulate strategies on how to identify and help students that might be going through wellbeing issues.

One of the outcomes of these meetings is The Cloud – a dedicated space full of books designed to help children better understand their emotions and guide them through difficult times in their life, e.g. dealing with grief.  On top of this, there are activities designed to help children calm down. The Champions are encouraged to take anybody here when they’re struggling, sit them down, talk to them and ultimately help them.

The team of Mental Health Champions are responsible for always being approachable to their peers. By remaining as compassionate, vigilant and empathetic as possible, they achieve a great deal in ensuring everybody’s concerns are heard and New Oak remains as a welcoming, inclusive community as possible.

The 9 Habits Champions meet fortnightly with our Designated Safeguarding Lead, Mrs Walsh, to discuss how they can assist their peers and the habit of the month. They then assist in delivering assemblies focused on one of the Oasis 9 Habits. For example, they all recently took the lead in delivering an assembly to the school based on being hopeful.

The 9 Habits Champions are also tasked with talking with children in the playground and asking them to complete safeguarding questionnaires and making sure they know where to go if they have any concerns. By doing this, we can ensure pupils’ voices are heard, nobody feels alone and the link between pupils and staff remains as strong as possible.
