Tree Planting Project
Tree Planting Video
Throughout February, with the assistance of pupils, teachers, staff and members of the community, we have been delighted to collaborate with the Forest of Avon Trust to plant 335 metres of hedgerow across our school’s grounds. This hedgerow consisted of 1,980 trees in total and was a mix of: hazel, hawthorn, field maple, dogwood, crab apple, wild cherry, wild plum, cherry plum, elder and wild pear trees.
We also planted 7 separate 'specimen' trees, one for each year group and its correlating tree: sycamore, birch, beech, pedunculate oak, sessile oak, cherry and willow.
Furthermore, an orchard was planted at the front of the school. This orchard included: Beurre Hardy pears, Early Prolific plums, Lodgemore Nonpareil apples, Eden apples, Victoria plums, Serbian Gold quinces, Regina cherries, Czar plums, Jubilee plums and Rhead's Reinette apples.
Other than making the school grounds look more appealing, the trees will improve air quality in the local community, attract more wildlife and enable the school to grow its own fruit.
What’s more, this project helped to teach our pupils the importance of caring for the natural world and respecting their environment. The fact that they planted the trees themselves, and will be given responsibility for caring for them as they grow, will hopefully show them the significant positive impact that a group of people can have.
